Idlewild Community Alliance (ICA) is a resident-led nonprofit initiative dedicated to preserving Idlewild’s rich African-American heritage while building the infrastructure, skills, and partnerships needed for a resilient, locally owned future. Operating under the umbrella of Youth Community Agency, ICA advances practical projects in food access, small-business incubation, land stewardship, and placemaking so Idlewild remains a welcoming home and economic opportunity for current and future generations.

Mission

Empowering Idlewild by honoring its African-American heritage, fostering sustainable development, and enhancing residents’ quality of life through education, economic opportunity, community engagement, renewable energy planning, and simple agriculture.

Vision

To revitalize Idlewild as a thriving, self-sustaining community that celebrates its history while embracing future growth—integrating renewable energy, sustainable land management, and small-scale agriculture to protect natural beauty, expand economic opportunity, and unite generations.

Founder & Roots

Idlewild Community Alliance was founded by Rodnesha Ross, whose family story bridges Detroit and Idlewild. Rodnesha’s mother purchased property in Baldwin near Idlewild in 2006, drawing the family into the life of this historic town. Inspired by that legacy—and committed to keeping Idlewild’s identity as “Black Eden” alive—Rodnesha returned more than a decade later to plant roots of her own and launch ICA. Her vision is grounded in family memory, resident leadership, and practical planning to protect land, revive local commerce, and create opportunity for neighbors and future generations.

What We Do — Program Pillars

ICA builds community-led solutions that are culturally grounded and results oriented:

  • Food & Co-op Development — Launching the Idlewild Grocer & Farmers Market pilot in 2026 and building toward a resident-owned food co-op to increase fresh food access and keep dollars circulating locally.

  • Black Eden AgriCo-op & Urban Farming — Supporting regenerative farming, community gardens, youth apprenticeships, and land-access strategies to protect farmland and grow local supply.

  • Small-Business & Entrepreneurship — Conducting incubator feasibility studies, piloting the Idlewild Business Hub, offering shared grant-writing resources, and providing one-on-one mentorship to help entrepreneurs launch and scale.

  • Placemaking & Public Safety — Delivering community-designed murals, high-visibility crosswalks, and Williams Island beach enhancements (lighting, fencing) that honor heritage and improve safety.

  • Capacity Building & Shared Services — Establishing shared project-management tools, grant writing supports, and governance training so local nonprofits and residents can sustain progress long term.

  • Renewable Energy & Sustainability Planning — Exploring community solar, home energy efficiency, and land-restoration initiatives that protect Idlewild’s natural beauty.

Community & Partnerships

ICA works hand-in-hand with Idlewild residents, township officials, regional nonprofits, technical partners, local businesses, and philanthropic supporters. Our projects prioritize cross-sector collaboration and multi-jurisdictional coordination so planning and implementation reflect diverse expertise and local priorities. As a program of Youth Community Agency, ICA benefits from fiscal sponsorship and established administrative systems that support compliance and strong financial stewardship.

Governance & Transparency

We are committed to accountable, resident-led governance. ICA is guided by an advisory board composed primarily of Idlewild residents, property owners, local business partners, and community representatives. Board members serve two-year terms and play an active role in planning, oversight, and community engagement. For funders and partners, ICA provides annual reports, audited financials, and governance documents on request to ensure transparency and responsible stewardship of resources.
