From family roots to new beginnings — preserving stories, growing experiences.

Idlewild’s story is about a living bridge between Detroit and northwest Michigan. For generations, Detroit families traveled the highway to Idlewild’s lakeside cottages and summer camps—creating traditions, businesses, and lasting memories that shaped the town’s identity as “Black Eden.” Today the Idlewild Community Alliance celebrates that migration story while animating new opportunities: youth and adult camping, agritourism, and hands-on programs that reconnect residents and visitors with land, food, and culture. Through oral history, storytelling, and intergenerational programming, we honor the past and invite a broader future of stewardship and shared prosperity.

Agritourism Experiences — Piloting in 2026

Idlewild’s land is both legacy and livelihood. Beginning in 2026, our agritourism programs will connect visitors to local growers, seasonal harvests, and sustainable practices that keep food and land in community hands.

Farm Tours & Demonstrations

Guided visits to Black Eden AgriCo-op partner farms to learn regenerative practices, soil health, and small-scale animal care. Tours available weekdays and during weekend farm fairs.

Pick-Your-Own & Seasonal Markets

Pick-your-own berries in midsummer, heirloom tomato days in late summer, and fall harvest festivals with farm-to-table pop-ups — plus fresh produce at the Idlewild Grocer & Farmers Market pilot.

Workshops & Field Schools

Weekend workshops on composting, raised-bed gardening, seed saving, and youth ag entrepreneurship, delivered with local university and extension partners for best practices and certification opportunities.
